Implementing Tableau using the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) approach

You may be familiar with the term Minimal Viable Product (MVP), but we also regularly talk to customers who are new to this term. In this blog, we explain what a MVP is and how it applies to a Tableau implementation.

During Tableau projects, I like to make the statement: low-hanging fruit first. By this I mean a quick implementation of the software and the quick delivery of a few dashboards, which immediately offer added value. From here on more content and complexity can be added in short development cycles. This makes the implementation fun and visible for everyone, and after the implementation there can be new dashboards (and thus insights) on a regular basis. All together this leads to a quick adoption of Tableau.

Low-hanging fruit

This low-hanging fruit is what the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) consists of. For Tableau this means that it has to be defined which ‘dashboards’ are part of the MVP. One dashboard consists of several graphs and/or tables. For example, a dashboard could show the revenue and gross margin numbers in several cross sections. Our advice is to select at most 10 dashboards for the MVP, which mainly give insights which were not available before.

Implementing Tableau

We have seen implementations where the MVP consisted of only one dashboard which showed the sales revenue and margin. We can go live within one or two weeks with a dashboard that is recognizable and understandable for everyone. After that, we work on a little more content in short development cycles. A dashboard is added which give insight in Accounts Payable and payment behaviour of customers. After that, a similar dashboard for Accounts Payable is added. More and more departments and employees are being introduced to Tableau and the horizon is slowly expanding. We also often see the effect of the child in the candy store: “Hey, if I can have this, can I have that one too?” We also often see the positive effect of “jealousy”. An employee of department A sees a beautiful dashboard over the shoulder of his colleague in department B: “Hey, I want such a nice dashboard.”

The MVP process

Especially in the present time, when there are cautious thoughts about (large) investments, the MVP approach offers a great opportunity. This way, the Tableau implementation is not only cheaper, but also requires minimal time investment from you as a customer.

The MVP process works as follows: a brainstorm session is organised where we help you define the set of MVP dashboards. Thereafter, we install and configure Tableau (on-premise or elsewhere) and develop the MVP dashboards. After this we are ready for the go-live, during which the MVP dashboards are presented and training is given to key users. This whole process takes no more than a couple of weeks.
